on cnn as well. that's expected around 7:30 p.m. eastern, just under 30 minutes from now. we'll have that live from aurora for you. as i mentioned a few minutes ago, police are revealing a little of what they found in the shooting suspect's apartment. i want to get to ed lavendera now. he is outside. what are police saying now? what did they find in that apartment? >> reporter: explosives that this man put together. after they went through a great deal of effort which took about 36 hours from the moment they went in to james holmes' apartment, they were able to start taking away the evidence and the belongings from what we can tell, they have completely cleared out his apartment. a law enforcement source tells cnn, they removed interestingly enough a batman poster, a batman mask, and his computer. all of that has been taken away from the apartment. and obviously, they're going through that computer, trying to see what kind of evidence they might be able to find. they're hoping that would be a type of clue that would provide a great deal of evidence. and depth into what exactly james

veteran put his own life on the line to protect the lives of his friends. cnn's kyung lah has his story. >>> my mind was completely clear of what's going on. guys, here's a gun. he's shooting at people. stay down. and -- it's the best chance we have. >> reporter: the second thought for josh noland -- protect his friends. the 31-year-old navy veteran deployed to iraq twice, threw himself on top of his friends. newlyweds brandon and denise axlerod. dozens of bullets flew through the air. one ripped through noland's calf and lodged in his arm breaking the bone. >> i see that big hole in myeg and big hole in my arm. that's what brandon was like, stay down. >> reporter: noland said he flattened himself on the theater floor with his friends beneath him, hearing the gunman walk and wait. he must survive for his two sons, he says, whose pictures he carries. 9-year-old eric and 7-year-old ryan. then the gun jammed. if that gun had not jammed, that you'd be here? >> i know i wouldn't be here. if that gun -- if that gun did not jam, i am fully certain that i probably would not be here. >> reporter

chatter. and vacation or die. or both? on cnn saturday night. you know this well. the great recession hit wall street and then main street and now it's landing at the steps of city hall. this time public safety, your safety and my safety may take the hit. cuts in city service up for debate in cities large and small from camden to detroit to sacramento. cuts in fire and police protection, is it making all of us less safe. a good place to look for answers is in scranton where police saw their salaries cut to minimum wage. earlier i spoke with the scranton firefighter who described what he and his colleagues are going through. >> i'm a very proud parent. i'm proud to be a firefighter, but also i am more proud to be a parent and be able to provide for my family. i am concerned that if this maintains, i won't be able to do that. it's very stressful right now. without w that being said, i am fortunate to have a job in this economy, but i need to pay the bills. >> that was bob who is a police officer in scranton. this new rule means he is getting 7:25 an hour. thank you very much for joining us

. >> we have pictures that the cnn producer took as he flew over the mississippi river, and we can see where the river appears to be shrinking here, and what does that tell you just about how tough this is? >> well, when it is to the point of actual large rivers like the mississippi declining in the stream flow, that tells us that we have reached sort of another stage of drought and not just based on the rainfall, but a number of other factors like the temperature, and it's been somewhat prolonged. so it is definitely another stage of drought, ands i sa as , it is severe. we have to keep monitoring. >> do we know how long it will take to recover from the kinds of drought conditions we are faced now? >> well, we won't see anything until the fall or the winter. looks like we are setting up in el nino pattern and the '50s drought was that we were brought out of it by going into the el nino pattern which brought lots of moisture into texas, so it's very a very good sign that we are going into the el nino right now, and very likely in the winter we may see the conditions improving. >> thank

obama at 49% to romney's 43%. that's a three percentage point increase from just last month. cnn's political director mark preston joins us now from washington, d.c. nice to have you with us this morning, mark. the poll shows the race is in a statistical dead heat. there are also bullet points that both candidates will find a bit concerning. can you share those details with us? >> sure, zoraida. i think we'll expect the horse race all the way up to november to stay this close. this is going to be one of those real, real tight presidential elections p. but, of course, there are certain bullet points that we focus on wn we're looking at these numbers. let's look at this number on the economy. the economy, issue number one in this election. what most voters will likely vote on come november. mitt romney has a six-point advantage over president obama right now when asked who has a better idea to improve the economy. very good news for the romney campaign up in boston when they see that number. however, out in chicago, you can see that the obama campaign can take solace in this number
